Magento to Shopify migration, without the upgrade treadmill

Our team moves Magento and Adobe Commerce stores to Shopify for businesses in Melbourne and across Australia. Your catalogue, customers, orders and rankings come across, and the old store keeps trading until the switch.

Why stores leave Magento

Magento is powerful, and some businesses genuinely need it. These are the reasons the ones who don't usually call us.

  • “We're still on Magento 1.”

Magento 1 stopped receiving official security patches in June 2020. Moving to Shopify is usually cheaper than a full Magento 2 rebuild, and you stop owning the security problem.

  • “Every version upgrade turns into a project.”

Shopify updates itself. There's no upgrade to plan, budget for or test around, ever again.

  • “Hosting it properly costs a fortune.”

Magento needs serious servers to stay fast. Shopify's hosting, CDN and checkout are part of the plan fee.

  • “Only one developer understands our build.”

Shopify is a common platform with a large talent pool, so you're never stuck with a single person who knows how it works.

What moves across, and what doesn't

Magento's data model is richer than most, so a few things change shape on the way across. Here's what to expect before you commit.

  • Simple and configurable products

Carried across with prices, stock, images and categories; configurable products become Shopify products with variants.

  • Customers

Names, emails, addresses and order history come across.

  • Order history

Past orders are imported so your records and your customers' accounts stay complete.

  • CMS pages and blog content

Rebuilt in the new theme, with the text and images kept.

  • URLs and search rankings

Magento addresses (often ending in .html) are each redirected to their new Shopify URL.

  • SEO titles and descriptions

Carried across product by product and page by page.

  • Customer passwordsHandled differently

Passwords can't be exported from any platform, and Shopify doesn't need them: customers sign in with their email and a one-time code.

  • Customer groups, tier pricing and multi-storeHandled differently

Handled with Shopify Markets, B2B features or apps, depending on your plan. We map each one, and tell you if anything needs Shopify Plus, before you commit.

  • Custom extensionsHandled differently

Rebuilt with Shopify apps or custom app work. Some turn out to be unnecessary on Shopify, and we'll say so.

How a Magento to Shopify migration runs

Your current store keeps taking orders the whole way through.

  1. 1

    Audit the Magento store

We go through the catalogue, extensions, customer groups and integrations, and tell you how each will work on Shopify and whether you need Shopify Plus.

  2. 2

    Build on Shopify alongside it

The new store is built and loaded with your data while the old one keeps trading.

  3. 3

    Test with real orders

We place test orders, check payments, shipping, tax and emails, and compare products and customers against the old store.

  4. 4

    Switch over, then watch

Redirects go live with the new store. We watch orders, search traffic and tracking in the weeks after.

Scoped first, then a fixed price

The cost depends on catalogue size, how many attribute sets and extensions need mapping, and the integrations (ERP, POS, warehouse) that have to keep working. We audit the store, then quote one number.

“We engaged Web Divine to redesign our website with a focus on improving our branding, SEO, and overall user experience. They were easy to work with, took the time to understand our business, and delivered a clean, modern site that better reflects who we are as an ICT company. The LinkedIn integration is a nice touch, making it easier to connect with our audience and showcase what we do. We’ve also seen improvements in how the site presents in search, and the structure now supports both client engagement and general enquiries more effectively. Communication was straightforward, feedback was handled quickly, and the whole process felt well managed from start to finish. A solid team if you’re looking for a practical, well-executed website uplift.”

Answers to the usual questions

Not if the move is done properly. Magento URLs often end in .html, and none of them will exist on Shopify. Shopify uses its own fixed URL patterns (/products/, /collections/, /pages/), so every old address is redirected to its new one, and titles, descriptions and content are carried across. That mapping is part of every migration we do.

For most small and mid-sized stores, Shopify. Magento 1 has had no official security patches since June 2020, and a Magento 2 move is a full rebuild anyway. If you rely on complex B2B rules, deep customisation or multi-store setups that Shopify can't match, Magento 2 or Adobe Commerce may still be the right call, and we'll tell you.

Not always. Plus adds things like advanced B2B, checkout customisation and higher automation limits. Many Magento stores run comfortably on a standard Shopify plan. We'll recommend the lowest plan that does the job after the audit.

Each one is mapped to a Shopify equivalent: a built-in feature, an app or custom work. Some aren't needed at all on Shopify. You'll see the full list before you commit.

We scope the store first, then quote a fixed price. As a guide, a Shopify store in Australia typically costs $8,000 to $30,000+ depending on catalogue size, design and integrations. Magento stores often have larger catalogues and more integrations, which is what moves the number. Shopify's own plan fees are separate.

No. The Shopify store is built and tested alongside your current one, which keeps trading until the switch. The changeover itself is a domain change.

Yes. Our Shopify support covers fixes, changes and improvements by the hour, with hours packs or a monthly retainer.
