Why businesses move from WordPress to Shopify

Usually it's because selling has become the main job of the website. If content is still the main job, WordPress may suit you better, and we'll say so.

  • “We want to start selling online.”

Shopify gives you products, payments, shipping and tax in one place, without piecing it together from plugins.

  • “We're tired of updates and security worries.”

On Shopify, hosting, security and updates are handled for you. There's nothing to patch.

  • “We're running two systems, a site and a shop.”

Bringing the site and store together means one login, one design and one place to update.

  • “We can't make changes without a developer.”

Shopify's editor lets your team update pages, products and banners themselves.

What moves across, and what doesn't

A content site moves to Shopify well, with a couple of differences worth knowing about up front.

  • Pages

Rebuilt in the new Shopify theme, with the text and images kept.

  • Blog posts and images

Imported into Shopify's blog with their content, images, authors and dates.

  • Products, if you sell

Products from WooCommerce or another shop plugin come across with prices, stock and photos.

  • URLs and search rankings

Every old address is redirected to its new one, so Google and your visitors land in the right place.

  • SEO titles and descriptions

Carried across page by page and post by post.

  • Blog categoriesHandled differently

Shopify blogs use tags rather than categories, so we turn categories into tags (or separate blogs) and redirect the old category pages.

  • Plugins, forms and membershipsHandled differently

Contact forms, page builders and membership areas are rebuilt with Shopify features or apps. Member passwords can't be exported; on Shopify, customers sign in with an emailed one-time code.

How a WordPress to Shopify migration runs

Your current store keeps taking orders the whole way through.

  1. 1

    Audit the WordPress store

We list every page, post, form and plugin on the WordPress site, and tell you how each will work on Shopify, or whether it's needed at all.

  2. 2

    Build on Shopify alongside it

The new store is built and loaded with your data while the old one keeps trading.

  3. 3

    Test with real orders

We place test orders, check payments, shipping, tax and emails, and compare products and customers against the old store.

  4. 4

    Switch over, then watch

Redirects go live with the new store. We watch orders, search traffic and tracking in the weeks after.

Scoped first, then a fixed price

The cost depends on how many pages and posts there are, whether you're adding products, and the design. We audit the site, then quote one number.

“We engaged Web Divine to redesign our website with a focus on improving our branding, SEO, and overall user experience. They were easy to work with, took the time to understand our business, and delivered a clean, modern site that better reflects who we are as an ICT company. The LinkedIn integration is a nice touch, making it easier to connect with our audience and showcase what we do. We’ve also seen improvements in how the site presents in search, and the structure now supports both client engagement and general enquiries more effectively. Communication was straightforward, feedback was handled quickly, and the whole process felt well managed from start to finish. A solid team if you’re looking for a practical, well-executed website uplift.”

Answers to the usual questions

Not if the move is done properly. WordPress URLs like /about/ or /2024/05/post-name/ won't exist on Shopify. Shopify uses its own fixed URL patterns (/products/, /collections/, /pages/), so every old address is redirected to its new one, and titles, descriptions and content are carried across. That mapping is part of every migration we do.

Yes, Shopify has a built-in blog that handles posts, images, authors and comments. It uses tags rather than categories, so we map your categories to tags or separate blogs. If your business runs mainly on content, with hundreds of articles and complex categories, WordPress may still suit you better.

Yes. Some businesses keep WordPress for content and run Shopify alongside it. It works, but it means two systems to maintain. We'll go through the trade-off with you.

If you already sell on WordPress through WooCommerce, see our WooCommerce to Shopify migration page. This page is for WordPress sites moving everything, pages and blog included, onto Shopify.

We scope the store first, then quote a fixed price. As a guide, a Shopify store in Australia typically costs $8,000 to $30,000+ depending on catalogue size, design and integrations. A content-led site with a small catalogue usually sits at the lower end. Shopify's own plan fees are separate.

No. The Shopify store is built and tested alongside your current one, which keeps trading until the switch. The changeover itself is a domain change.

Yes. Our Shopify support covers fixes, changes and improvements by the hour, with hours packs or a monthly retainer.
